Today marks the 81st anniversary of the Quit India Movement. It was launched in 1942 by Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India’s struggle for independence, as a non-violent resistance seeking the end of British rule. Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, who became India’s first Prime Minister in 1947, and other protesters were imprisoned by the British.

G.G. Parikh, 99-years-old, was a student in 1942 when he was arrested and jailed for participating in the hoisting of an Indian flag at a protest organized in Mumbai. He is among those who fought for India’s freedom, whose role is noted in Unsung Heroes Detail: Paying tribute to India’s freedom fighters.

The publication is part of “an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.” The celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted in the publication, is an “elixir of inspirations of the warriors of freedom struggle… is a festival of awakening of the nation; festival of fulfilling the dream of good governance; and the festival of global peace and development.”

Today, Parikh was to participate in a Shanti (Peace) March in Mumbai, organized on the anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

However, the police reportedly prevented Parikh from taking part in the march. Others including Tushar Gandhi, author and great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, were also stopped by the police from attending the march.

On social media X, Tushar Gandhi posted, “I have been detained…as I left home to commemorate 9th August Quit India Day. I am proud. My Great Grandparents Bapu and (his wife) Ba had also been arrested by the British Police on the historic date.”

The message of the Peace March was: Hate, leave India, let's join hearts with love.
