September 26, 2022
Sumita Ghose founded Rangsutra Crafts in 2006 to try and provide regular work to artisans in rural India. “Today, we sell kurtas, scarves, jackets and other clothes made by more than 2,000 artisans in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. They are thus able to work throughout the year and support their families,” says Ghose, who is the Managing Director. Rangsutra, which is based in New Delhi, is partly owned by the artisans.
Here are some of Rangsutra’s apparel available for the upcoming Holiday Season, which starts with Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on October 24th. Items can be shipped within India and also globally. Click on the links for more description and details - the sizes are for the Indian market.
This kurta is from the Rene Collection, an attempt towards zero waste by using left over fabric to make garments for everyday wear.
Nilofer Pink Handwoven kurta/ dress. A line pleated kurta, made in handwoven cotton fabric, with full front placket. The lotus motifs are made using extra weft weaving, a traditional technique. Extra yarn is inserted into the weft, with the warp threads counted and lifted manually by hand in order to create motifs and patterns while weaving the fabric.
Juhi Teal Green Kurta With Crewel Embroidered Sleeves. This kurta is made of bamboo silk fabric and hand embroidered by artisans in Srinagar, Kashmir, using the crewel technique.
Pink Kantha Mandarin Collar Jacket. This jacket was made using the traditional kantha technique from Bengal, where pieces of leftover fabric are patched together to make quilts. The lines and patterns, with a running stitch on the surface of the fabric, serve a dual purpose – holding the fabric together and embellishing it.
Rohil Green Cotton Kurta With Soof Embroidery. Soof embroidery is practiced by women who migrated from Pakistan to Rajasthan, India, during and after the 1971 India Pakistan war. They left all their possessions behind but carried their culture and intricate hand embroidery skills with them, teaching it to their children and grandchildren. The motif in soof embroidery is created by counting the threads on the warp and weft, making geometric designs in near perfect shapes.
Burgundy Handwoven Dobby Stripe Cotton Full Sleeve Shirt. This shirt is woven on a handloom with the use of a dobby technique which has a running stitch as embellishment.
