Swati Sharma leaves Atlantic for editor-in-chief job at Vox
Vox, an online news analysis site, announced this week that Swati Gauri Sharma will be its editor-in-chief starting next month. “I am thrilled to take on the role…(Vox) has worked to provide a deep understanding of an ever complex and often confusing world,” tweeted Sharma.
Founded in 2014 by three American journalists, Vox says its goal is to “shepherd audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.” Vox, which is based in Washington D.C., distributes its free content via Facebook, YouTube, email, iTunes, Instagram and other platforms.
The website reaches nearly 30 million readers each month. Vox also produces a podcast lineup featuring “Today, Explained,” “The Weeds,” and more; as well as several television and video series, including Explained on Netflix, “Missing Chapter”, “Earworm” and “Glad You Asked” on YouTube.
Vox Media, which owns Vox, publishes New York Magazine; SB Nation, online fan-oriented sports communities; The Verge, which covers technology; Eater, which is about food and dining; Racked, a shopping, beauty, and fashion publication; Curbed, which covers real estate; and other publications.
The company has raised $308 million in funding from investors including NBC Universal and General Atlantic, according to Crunchbase. In April last year, after the COVID-19 impact began, Vox reportedly took measures to cut costs, including impacting the salaries about a tenth of its staff.
At Vox, Sharma, 34, will lead a team of about 90 journalists. She is leaving The Atlantic, where she was most recently the managing editor and editor of its digital service. A paid subscription site since 2019, The Atlantic reportedly has 400,000 subscribers.
Earlier, Sharma spent more than four years at The Washington Post, as Deputy General Assignment Editor and as Foreign and National Security Digital Editor. She also worked at The Boston Globe.
Sharma earned her B.A. in Journalism and Political Science from Northeastern University, Boston.
On her twitter account, Sharma says she is a fan of California, hot sauce and Bollywood. A photo of Rekha, a Bollywood star dominates her twitter home page.
