Sandeep Dhaliwal killed near Houston. Racist attack, five days after Modi-Trump rally?

Sandeep Dhaliwal, a traffic policeman, was shot dead September 27, 2019 in Harris County, a suburb of Houston. Robert Solis allegedly shot Dhaliwal in the back of his head, after he was stopped for running ignoring a traffic sign. Solis was arrested nearby later.

Dhaliwal’s killing shocked Sikhs and other Indians living in the Houston area, adding to their fears of rising racism in America. A video, about Dhaliwal’s work with the community, shared by the Harris County police on Twitter, has gotten over 800,000 views: https://twitter.com/HCSOTexas/status/1177796393349603328

On September 22, five days earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at a “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston, along with President Donald Trump. In a CNN opinion piece, Swati Narayan and Manpreet K. Singh stated that they were not “…thrilled to see Modi and Trump in our backyard…both leaders have stoked divisions within their respective countries…We can’t afford to ignore the pernicious impact that President Trump’s words and policies have had on immigrants and communities of color.” https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/22/opinions/modi-trump-rally-kashmir-narayan-singh/index.html

Dhaliwal was popular among local residents. Some of them held a candle-lit vigil on Friday night, and shared fond memories and videos of the fallen cop. In one video, which the county sheriff’s department shared to Twitter, Dhaliwal can be seen letting a young boy lock him in handcuffs. In another, he can be seen collecting supplies for victims of Hurricane Harvey, The Daily Beast reported.

Harris County officials say that so far there is no evidence that the killing was an act of racial hatred.
